Video: Why getting surgery for obesity?

In many cases people fail in attempting to lose weight through diets and exercise, which is why surgical treatment is used to accomplish it. This also reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and ameliorates other pathologies such as diabetes, sleep apnoea or hypertension, among others.

Video: What you should know about bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery involves different surgical treatments meant to treat morbid obesity, defined as the one that exceeds a BMI of 35. The objective of this surgery is to reduce the volume of the stomach to reduce appetite and the quantity of ingested food.

There are different procedures of bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass or tubular gastrectomy.

After the surgery, the patient will have to be on a specific diet, should do some exercise and should change his habits of life.

    What is a gastric bypass?

The gastric bypass is the most used surgical procedure and its finality is to reduce the size of the stomach. This will divide the stomach to reduce it and will connect the stomach to a more advanced portion of the small intestine.

To sum up, the gastric bypass meets three objectives: restrictive (with less food the patient feels satiety), malabsorption (the digestive system absorbs fewer calories than ingested) and metabolic (there is a hormonal reaction that reduces appetite).

    Advantages of gastric bypass:

    • Lasting weight loss
    • It is possible to lose between 65-75% of the weight in five years from the surgery
    • Few side effects
    • Good quality of life

Video: Surgical treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

Nowadays there is a surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes called metabolic surgery. This intervention allows to control the disease in more than 90% of patients.

This is possible reducing the stomach, which reduces caloric intake and decreases insulin resistance, while losing body fat. It also avoids the food to pass throught the duodenum and, finally, helps the arrival of fats to the ileum (intestine). This way, pancreatic insulin secretion is stimulated.

Few months after the intervention, the patient will not have to inject himself with insulin anymore or having a strict control of sugar levels.
